Nejabat, who is the chairman of Iran-Britain parliamentary friendship committee, also protested the British foreign secretary’s derogatory remarks about Iran in a conference in the United Arab Emirates.
“Such statements will not help develop relations between the two countries,” Nejabat told the British top diplomat to Tehran Jerry Addams.
The lawmaker also criticized Britain for detaining former Iranian ambassador to Jordan Nasrollah Tajik, saying his release is essential for building mutual confidence.
Turning to Tehran’s nuclear program, the MP said the UN atomic watchdog is closely monitoring Iran’s nuclear activities.
“So far, the International Atomic Energy Agency has reported no diversion in Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities,” Nejabat said.
He also stated that Iran and Britain have great potential to strengthen relations, especially in cultural and scientific spheres.
The MP also said the two countries’ parliamentary friendship groups can help remove hurdles in bilateral relations.
Addams said Britain and Iran enjoy great opportunities for economic, political, and cultural cooperation and expressed hope that grounds would be prepared for realizing these potentials.
The British diplomat insisted that dialogue between the two countries’ officials especially lawmakers is necessary to clear up misunderstandings.
